Marvin Minsky once said that the brain was a computer made of meat. He meant it as a clarification, not a provocation — though it functioned as both. The idea that the mind was, at bottom, a computational process running on biological hardware was, for Minsky, not a reductive insult to human dignity but a genuinely exciting scientific hypothesis. If true, it meant that intelligence was understandable. It could be taken apart, studied, and — eventually — built from other materials.
He spent sixty years trying to do exactly that. He built the first neural network learning machine. He co-founded MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the most productive AI research environment of the twentieth century. He wrote two books — Perceptrons and The Society of Mind — that defined and then redirected entire programmes of AI research. He supervised or influenced a staggering proportion of the best AI researchers of the following generation. He played piano seriously enough to discuss music theory with Ray Kurzweil and composition with Noam Chomsky at parties in his house in Brookline.
He was also, in the judgement of many who knew him, the most intellectually stimulating person they had ever met — and, occasionally, the most infuriating. He had a gift for demolishing ideas, including ideas he had himself promoted, and a corresponding impatience with people who could not keep up with the demolition. He was generous with his time to students he found promising and largely indifferent to those he did not. He was famous for asking questions that reframed conversations entirely, and for leaving rooms in the middle of sentences when a more interesting thought occurred to him.
He died in January 2016, at eighty-eight, having watched the deep learning revolution he had dismissed as inadequate produce results that would have astonished him had he lived five years longer. Whether they would have changed his mind about the fundamental questions is impossible to know. He was not, in general, a man whose mind was easily changed by results. He was a man whose mind was changed by arguments.
New York and Harvard
Minsky was born in New York City in August 1927, the son of Henry Minsky, an ophthalmologist, and Fannie Reiser, a Zionist activist. He grew up in Manhattan, attended the Fieldston School and then Bronx High School of Science, served briefly in the Navy at the end of the war, and entered Harvard in 1946.
At Harvard he studied mathematics, but his interests ranged widely — he took courses in genetics, neuroanatomy, and psychology alongside mathematics and physics, developing early the conviction that intelligence was a biological phenomenon that could be understood scientifically. He was also, at Harvard, an extraordinarily social and intellectually aggressive presence. His friends and classmates included, among others, the composer Leonard Bernstein, with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship and with whom he discussed, seriously and at length, the relationship between musical structure and cognitive processing.
After Harvard he went to Princeton for graduate work, arriving in 1950 — the same year McCarthy arrived. They became immediate friends and immediate intellectual sparring partners. Both were obsessed with machine intelligence. Both were convinced it was achievable. They disagreed about almost everything else.
At Princeton, Minsky built SNARC — the Stochastic Neural Analog Reinforcement Calculator. It was, in 1951, the first machine designed to learn. SNARC used forty artificial neurons — vacuum tube circuits designed to model the behaviour of biological neurons, with connections whose strength was modified by experience — to simulate a rat navigating a maze. The connections that led the simulated rat to the reward were strengthened; those that led away from it were weakened. The machine could, in a primitive sense, learn.
This was a neural network, four years before the term was in common use. Minsky had built it as a PhD project, somewhat casually, as a demonstration that neural learning was physically realisable. He then largely abandoned the approach. He completed his PhD in mathematics with a thesis on neural networks, looked at what he had built, and concluded that it was not the right path to intelligence. He spent the next fifteen years arguing that symbolic reasoning — logic, formal representation, explicit computation — was.
This is the central paradox of Minsky’s career: the man who built the first neural network machine spent decades arguing that neural networks were the wrong approach to AI.
MIT and the AI Lab
In 1958, McCarthy and Minsky arrived at MIT together, recruited by the Research Laboratory of Electronics. They shared a room, shared graduate students, and co-founded what became, in 1959, the MIT Artificial Intelligence Project — later the MIT AI Laboratory, now CSAIL. It was, from the beginning, a place with a particular character: theoretically ambitious, technically skilled, intellectually combative, and convinced that human-level AI was not merely possible but imminent.
That last conviction — that human-level AI was perhaps twenty years away — was shared by McCarthy, Minsky, and most of their colleagues in the 1960s and early 1970s. It was wrong. Minsky said, in 1967, that within a generation the problem of creating artificial intelligence would be substantially solved. He said similar things at other points in the 1960s and 1970s. These predictions were wrong in ways that turned out to be instructive: the problems that proved hardest were not the ones that had looked hardest, and the assumptions about how intelligence worked that underlay the predictions were subtler and more problematic than they had seemed.
The AI Lab under Minsky and McCarthy was where many of the most important concepts in AI were developed. The students who passed through it in the 1960s and 1970s — Patrick Winston, Gerald Jay Sussman, Berthold Horn, David Marr, Terry Winograd — went on to define the field. Minsky’s supervisory style was intense and idiosyncratic. He was famous for sitting down at a student’s terminal and typing for hours, developing ideas in real time, occasionally solving the student’s problem but more often generating ten new problems and leaving the student to work out which ones mattered.
He also built things. He designed and built the first head-mounted display for immersive visual environments — a precursor to virtual reality — in 1963. He designed and built, with Seymour Papert, a robotic arm and hand that could manipulate objects. He designed a confocal microscope that is still in use in biological research. He built, in other words, not just theories but machines, and the machines informed the theories in ways that purely mathematical approaches could not.
Perceptrons
In 1969, Minsky and Seymour Papert published Perceptrons: An Introduction to Computational Geometry. It was a mathematical analysis of the capabilities and limitations of the perceptron — the single-layer neural network learning algorithm invented by Frank Rosenblatt in 1957 and widely promoted as the basis for machine learning.
The perceptron was simple and appealing. You connected a layer of input units to an output unit with adjustable weights, presented examples with correct labels, and adjusted the weights until the output matched the labels. Rosenblatt had shown that if the examples were linearly separable — if there was any linear boundary that separated the two classes — the perceptron algorithm would find it. He and his followers had made sweeping claims about what this implied for the future of machine intelligence.
Minsky and Papert’s book subjected these claims to rigorous mathematical analysis and found them wanting. The central result was a proof that a single-layer perceptron cannot compute the XOR function — cannot correctly classify inputs that require a non-linear decision boundary. More generally, they showed that perceptrons were limited to computing linearly separable functions, and that many of the tasks that would be required of a genuinely intelligent system were not linearly separable.
This was mathematically correct and important. It was also, in its effects on the field, considerably more damaging than Minsky and Papert had perhaps intended. The book redirected funding and attention away from neural network research and toward the symbolic AI approaches that Minsky and McCarthy favoured. Research on multi-layer networks — which could compute non-linear functions and were not subject to the limitations Minsky and Papert had identified — was largely abandoned for nearly a decade.
The irony, visible in retrospect, is severe. Multi-layer neural networks — trained with backpropagation, running on modern hardware, applied to large datasets — are precisely the systems that came to dominate AI research fifty years later. The limitations Minsky and Papert identified were real, but they applied only to single-layer networks. The book’s influence in discouraging research on multi-layer approaches was, by most retrospective assessments, a significant setback. Geoff Hinton, who persisted with neural networks through the winters that followed, has described Perceptrons as one of the most damaging books in the history of AI research.
Minsky, in later life, disputed this reading. He argued that the book had been misread, that it had never claimed to address multi-layer networks, and that the responsibility for the overreaction lay with readers rather than authors. There is some truth in this. There is also something uncomfortable about a man whose mathematical precision in analysing one class of system was used, incorrectly but predictably, to dismiss an entire research direction.
The Society of Mind
In 1986, Minsky published The Society of Mind, the book he had been working toward for most of his career. It was unlike anything else in AI — not a technical paper, not a textbook, not a popular science book, but a collection of two hundred and seventy short essays, each occupying exactly one page, each presenting a single idea, many of them in apparent contradiction with each other.
The central thesis was stated clearly in the opening pages: the mind is not a single, unified thing. It is a society — a vast collection of small, simple, largely mindless agents, each capable of only a limited operation, whose interactions produce the complex, flexible, apparently intelligent behaviour we call thinking. No single agent understands anything. No single agent is conscious. The mind emerges from their interactions, and the emergence is genuinely surprising — the whole is qualitatively different from any of the parts.
This was, in 1986, a radical idea. It contradicted the assumption, shared by most AI researchers and by most people who thought about mind at all, that intelligence had a centre — that there was something, somewhere in the brain or in a machine, that did the thinking. Minsky was arguing that this assumption was wrong. Intelligence was not a thing but a process; not a place but a pattern; not a substance but a structure of interactions.
The book was praised by cognitive scientists, philosophers, and educators and received with mixed feelings by AI researchers, some of whom found it too vague to generate testable predictions or implementable algorithms. Minsky was not trying to provide an algorithm. He was trying to provide a new way of seeing — a framework that, if correct, would transform what problems AI researchers were trying to solve.
Whether the society of mind theory is correct is still debated. What is not debated is that it influenced an enormous amount of subsequent work: in cognitive architectures, in multi-agent systems, in the study of emergent behaviour, and in the design of AI systems that decompose complex tasks into collections of simpler ones. The modern practice of building AI systems as ensembles of specialised components, each handling a part of the problem, owes something — not everything, but something — to Minsky’s framework.
The Frame Problem and Common Sense
Throughout his career, Minsky returned repeatedly to what he considered the central unsolved problem of AI: common sense. Human intelligence is saturated with implicit knowledge about the world — knowledge so pervasive and so automatically applied that we almost never notice it. We know that objects continue to exist when we stop looking at them. We know that people have beliefs, desires, and intentions. We know that fire is hot and water is wet and that if you drop a glass it will probably break. We know thousands of things like this, and we apply them constantly, effortlessly, in combination.
Getting machines to know these things — to represent and reason with the dense fabric of common sense that underlies everyday human intelligence — was, for Minsky, the hardest problem in AI. He worked on approaches to it throughout his career: frames, scripts, K-lines, the society of mind architecture. None of them fully solved it. None of them were expected to, entirely. They were attempts to understand the problem well enough to make progress on it.
The frame problem that McCarthy had identified in formal logic was, for Minsky, a symptom of something deeper: the difficulty of representing the fluid, exception-laden, context-sensitive character of human knowledge in any formal system. Logical representations were too brittle; they worked well in closed, well-defined domains but broke down in the open-ended complexity of the real world. Minsky believed that AI needed radically different approaches to knowledge representation, and he spent decades trying to develop them, with results that were more influential on subsequent thinking than on immediate implementation.
The Controversies
Minsky was a man of large personality and large convictions, and he generated controversy throughout his career. Some of it was intellectual — his dismissal of neural networks, his scepticism about the Turing Test, his impatience with researchers he considered insufficiently rigorous. Some of it was social — he was associated with Jeffrey Epstein, attending conferences Epstein funded and accepting a donation for the MIT Media Lab; the nature and extent of this relationship became a subject of painful public scrutiny after Epstein’s arrest in 2019, three years after Minsky’s death. His estate and colleagues disputed some of the specific claims made; others were not in dispute.
These associations do not erase his scientific contributions. They are part of the complete picture of a complex man, and they deserve acknowledgement as such.
The Legacy
Minsky’s scientific legacy is layered and partly paradoxical. He built the first neural network machine and spent decades opposing neural network research. He made sweeping predictions about the imminence of human-level AI that proved wrong in ways that set back the field’s credibility. He wrote a book that redirected AI away from its most eventually productive direction.
He also co-founded the most important AI research institution of the twentieth century. He developed the frame theory of knowledge representation that influenced every subsequent approach to common sense reasoning. He wrote The Society of Mind, which gave researchers and thinkers a way of conceptualising intelligence that remains productive. He trained or influenced a generation of AI researchers whose work defines the field. He thought, more deeply and more consistently than almost anyone, about what intelligence actually was and what it would take to understand it.
The deep learning systems that now dominate AI — the language models, the image generators, the game-playing agents — are not what Minsky envisioned. They are, in important ways, exactly the kind of system he thought was insufficient for genuine intelligence: statistical pattern matchers without explicit symbolic representations, without the kind of structured knowledge he thought was essential. Whether he was right about that — whether the current systems are approaching genuine understanding or producing a sophisticated simulacrum of it — is still an open question.
It is, in fact, the central question of AI right now. Minsky asked it first and asked it most persistently. He did not answer it. Neither has anyone else.
